A rainy day does not need a big plan. Here are three places to get out of the house, plus two library options you can use at home.
Check opening times and session details before leaving. The museum has paid admission; the at-home options need a Vancouver Island Regional Library card and some initial setup.
01 / Get out without a big plan
Campbell River Library
Browse the shelves together and find a few books to read. You do not need to build the visit around a scheduled activity. If borrowing books would help with the rest of the day, bring your library card.
Before you go: Storytimes and playroom sessions have their own schedules. Check the branch calendar rather than assuming they run throughout opening hours.
02 / Play together and meet other parents
Family Place
Family Place offers community-based parent-child drop-ins through Campbell River Family Services Society. It is worth checking when you would like somewhere to go together, with activities for your child and a chance to connect with other parents.
Dad tip: A welcoming place for parents and kids to have fun, learn and connect. Check what the current session includes, as activities and meals may vary.
03 / A paid indoor change of scene
Museum at Campbell River
Explore the exhibits together when everyone wants something different to look at. This is a paid outing, so check the current admission options before deciding whether it fits the day.
Before you go: Opening hours change seasonally. Check first if you are planning a morning visit. Free parking is accessed from 5th Avenue.
04 / Stay home with a story
TumbleBookLibrary through VIRL
Read or listen together without getting everyone out the door. TumbleBookLibrary includes animated picture books, audiobooks and early-reader stories, available online to VIRL cardholders.
Dad tip: Try signing in before you need it. Choose one story together and see where the afternoon goes.
05 / A quieter afternoon at home
Kanopy Kids through VIRL
A children's program or film can be a workable option when staying in is what fits. Kanopy Kids is available through VIRL and does not use the library's monthly viewing tickets. Other parts of Kanopy have different limits.
Dad tip: Connect your library card and test the device first. Choose the Kids collection, then check that the program suits your child.
Looking for a different kind of outing?
If the weather clears, the outdoor guide has playgrounds, waterfront parks and forest walks to choose from.
Details can change. Each Resource listing links to the original provider so you can check before making plans.
